IMS and SOA Learning Series Demystifies
Mainframe SOA by Providing Hands-On Experience

ATLANTA, December 16th, 2008GT Software [www.gtsoftware.com], a leading global provider of rapid SOA development solutions that leverage mainframe resources, today announced a learning series co-sponsored by IBM designed to deliver interactive education focused on service-oriented architecture (SOA) capabilities within the context of IBM?s IMS transaction and database systems. Challenged to “do more for less,” business leaders are looking for innovative methods to drive more economic value out of their IBM System z mainframes, which power the top 50 banks worldwide and 22 of the top 25 US retailers.

This learning series is designed to demystify SOA to the large and loyal base of IMS customers. The hands-on workshops focus on how companies today can leverage IMS as part of a comprehensive SOA strategy. These interactive workshops have already been conducted in Dallas, TX; New York, NY; Columbus, OH; Phoenix, AZ; Glendale, CA and internationally in Toronto, Ontario and Amsterdam, Netherlands.

More than the typical PowerPoint seminar, attendees at these workshops get first hand experience building Web services against a live IMS system. Participants learn how to develop a requirements checklist for IMS and SOA, and then actually build in-bound and outbound Web services against the live IMS system. Further, SOA governance, performance, and security considerations are addressed.

“The IMS and SOA Workshop held recently at the TRIDEX User Group in New York City was a well executed seminar that was engaging and tangible,” said Nate Murphy, president of the Tridex New York City database user group. “The hands-on training was incredibly valuable as participants gained a deeper understanding of how simple it is to build and deploy web services within an IMS environment. I would urge any mainframe architect, DBA, or application developer to attend one of these workshops, as it goes beyond a lecture and enables you to put your ‘hands on the wheel? to build web services.”

GT Software and IBM intend to continue the series internationally in 2009 to include workshops in Stuttgart, Germany; Paris, France; Madrid, Spain; Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, Australia.

“The business decision to leverage investments in a proven platform like IMS, enabled by new approaches like SOA, is one that provides tangible results while delivering on strategic objectives,” said Rob Morris, chief strategy officer at GT Software. “IMS users are loyal to this legendary database and transaction system, and for good reason. It provides an information foundation for countless strategic applications. Through these workshops, GT Software is offering a truly unique opportunity to enable attendees to make better decisions through first-hand experience. We are privileged to partner with IBM to help demystify SOA for IMS customers.”

Using Ivory Service Architect from GT Software, developers can quickly and easily create and publish Web services, developing right-sized composite business services from existing mainframe assets with little or no training, and no consulting required. The solution then provides a high-performance runtime engine for executing the deployed business services.

In addition, Ivory provides the most cost effective options for mainframe SOA by enabling users to choose how to manage SOA-related workloads. By leveraging specialty engines like the IFL with zLinux or the zAAP with zOS, increased MIPS is no longer an impediment to SOA adoption using Ivory.

GT Software has been accepted into the IBM SOA Specialty, which provides technical enablement and a skills-building roadmap for partners who want to access the growing SOA market opportunity. With this achievement, Ivory Service Architect from GT Software integrates with the IBM SOA Foundation, a single, integrated platform that combines the industry?s top application server and integration capabilities.
