The COBOL of choice of thousands of developers just got an upgrade

Mainframe and open system developers looking to extend COBOL applications through Microsoft’s development suite just received a significant enhancement with the launch of Fujitsu’s latest NetCOBOL for .NET release. Distributed globally by premier mainframe integration/migration solutions provider GT Software, NetCOBOL for .NET v8 now offers developers the capability of using powerful new coding techniques and automated documentation capabilities in their development strategies.

The new software is the only non-IBM COBOL compiler to allow access to IBM’s Language Environment Services (LE Services). LE Services were designed on the mainframe to extend COBOL’s capabilities by allowing multiple languages (COBOL, PL1, C and Assembler) to call standard routines shared by all of those languages.

NetCOBOL for .NET now allows that same capability for people who are considering moving their COBOL applications off of the mainframe or are developing outside of a mainframe environment. “This access is crucial to the future success of many COBOL users, as they now have more options at their disposal than ever before”, said Yoshio Takahashi, Director, Application Management Middleware Department III at Fujitsu Limited.

“NetCOBOL is a lifeline for developers seeking a path forward to interfacing with other .NET languages like C# and VB.NET”, said Wilson Rains, VP of Global Alliances, GT Software. “Those finding it harder and harder to find trained, seasoned COBOL developers can use NetCOBOL as a transition to other languages while protecting the business logic contained in their COBOL programs.”

The new NetCOBOL release also features support for automatic COBOL XML documentation and NuGet, the package manager for the Microsoft development platform including .NET.

In addition to the above benefits, NetCOBOL for .NET v8 offers:

  • Support for Visual Studio 2017
  • Support for .NET Framework 4.6.2
  • Support for IBM LE subroutines
    • Bit operation subroutines
    • Condition processing subroutines
    • Date and time subroutines
    • Dynamic storage area subroutines
    • General subroutines
    • Initialization and Termination subroutines
    • Math subroutines
    • Message processing subroutines
    • Country wise language support subroutines

NetCOBOL for .NET v8 is available immediately from GT Software.
