Using tcACCESS® to Access VSAM Data

LUEG AG is a large reseller of DaimlerChrysler AG and represents Mercedes®, with thirteen centers and an additional three centers in the western Saxony area of Germany. LUEG AG also runs additional centers for the DaimlerChrysler brands Smart and Chrylser Jeep®.

With considerable expenditure, LUEG AG invests in a future oriented expansion of its service offering. This will assure that today's support quality is already meeting tomorrow's customer expectations.

Business Situation

LUEG AG uses an IBM Multiprise 3000 running VM and VSE/ESA 2.3. The operational data is stored under DL/1 and VSAM. They are currently operating with in-house developed applications for the operative areas "New Cars", "Used Cars", "Parts", "Services", etc. Additionally, LUEG AG uses a third party package called IFAS/IPAS/ICOS for General Ledger, HR and Controlling, which stores the data in a proprietary format in VSAM and DL/1.

The Controlling Department uses an OLAP based analysis tool, developed by CubeWare, for Business Management Analysis. In addition, the file transfer procedures in place are large-scale and expensive, particularly for transferring DL/1 information.

The Solution

During the proof of concept with tcACCESS™, the DL/1 databases were easily accessed by MS-OFFICE applications. It became apparent to LUEG AG how important the real-time access was when performing company critical analysis to support the decision making process.

After two years of using tcACCESS, the product has become an integral part of the daily DP routine at LUEG AG. "We can access our operations data now in minutes using tcACCESS", says Bodo Bremer, Controller of LUEG AG, "tcACCESS enables us to perform our own selections of the data, right at the time when we need it to do our analysis. We use tcACCESS in the area of "Used Cars" for Revenue-and-Gross Return-Analysis. The data we process is real-time and of extreme high relevance to our management." Bodo Bremer's next step will be to use the scripting language of the CubeWare product to directly access the operative databases using ODBC.

In the meantime, Operations at LUEG AG has replaced all critical file transfers with tcACCESS. "We are pleased by the ease-of-use and by the excellent performance of the product", quotes Michael Wenzel, Application Developer at LUEG AG. "In addition to the file transfers, we use tcACCESS to query our databases and generate reports via MS-ACCESS. Because of the direct ODBC connection to our databases, we always deal with current data and can quickly react to requests form our end-user departments."
